CARRIE KLEWIN LAWRENCE HEADSHOT

Carrie Klewin Lawrence (she/her) is an experimental and collaborative international stage director. Carrie is an acting and personal branding coach, and author of Origin Story, a book that champions storytelling as a secret weapon for success.

Stage Director

Directing theatrical productions conceived through an ensemble-driven process, Carrie specializes in movement-based storytelling, musicals, opera, and devised work developed from improvisation, dance theatre, and commedia dell’arte.

A penchant for new play development has led Carrie to direct the premiers of many new works, participate on selection committees for Sundance Theatre Lab, and Playwrights Realm, and develop work with Moises Kaufman, Mark Bly, The Kennedy Center, and The Red Wolves.

Social change often dominates project selection, leading to relationships with Theatre Without Borders, Amnesty International, Coexistence International, and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice.

Carrie founded the Stage Directing Resources social network and website for directors. Carrie is a proud member of SDC, Directors Gathering, ATHE, AATE, and an alumna of Directors Lab West ’06.

Origin Story

Power of the Inciting Incident

by Carrie Klewin Lawrence

Origin Story is a gem of inspiration, gentle encouragement, and badass empowerment. This book will truly resonate with those who have questioned everything and are looking to honor themselves and the root of who they are - likely uncovering what they knew all along.”

What People Are Saying

“There is no doubt that the Washington Savoyard's production of  Gilbert and Sullivan's "PIRATES OF PENZANCE"  (To 11/7) has no comparison...even in native England...as a top theatrical delight. Carrie Klewin provides magnificent direction for this "youngish" cast and Pauline Grossman is faultless in matching the dancing to the singing of the actors.  It is 140 minutes of smash family fun.   Every number gets better than the previous one.”

— Bob Anthony, All Arts Review

Origin Story would be great for anyone who, has forgotten their innermost dreams and needs to be reminded of the way back, wants to be reminded of the superhero that lives inside, or is scared of the blank page and needs a little push to dive in.” — Jose Solis, Culture Critic

Dear Carrie,

Thank you so much for being a guest instructor for our Acting II class! Your class was so well received! You had the perfect lesson plan for our hour together, and really made the daunting task of the Cold Reading so accessible. I really noticed how the students had “Ah ha” moments due to the tricks of Punctuation and Key Word. I know they will definitely use your tricks for the fall auditions.
