Devised Curations
A Workshop
DLW 2023
Devised Curations (workshop)
Led by Sheetal Gandhi, Debbie McMahon & Carrie Klewin Lawrence, with contributions by Kristi Schultz
What is devising, and why do we do it? What are the entry points, necessary ingredients, and leadership models? How are devised projects curated, and where does the inspiration come from? Sheetal Gandhi, Debbie McMahon & Carrie Klewin Lawrence lead an interactive, generative workshop on devised work.
An introduction and instigation of generating devised work, with an emphasis on purpose, leadership styles, freedom in structure, and diverse approaches to process.

Text/Movement-based warm-up with Sheetal Gandhi
“Numbers” 1-100 (Simone Forti)
Everyone going across the floor, one at a time. Numbers 1-100 is your vocabulary. Stream of conscious movement paired with numbers.
First, one at a time. Then, two at a time, allowing yourself to be “permeable” or influenced by your partner without losing your own connection to your internal discovery.
5-minute Free Write on the text “Appearances can be deceiving”
Again, going across the floor one at a time. This time, drawing on your free-write for your “vocabulary” as you stream of conscious/improvisationally move and talk.

“I like to use devising as a research and development tool before diving into a more traditional process. It sort of replaces the 'table work' phase. I don't know if anyone else works like that, but I find devising to be really useful as a tool for preparation and not just for an end result.”
